I genuinely thought that I’d resume my life as it was following the birth of our first son. I planned for maternity leave, but other than that I expected our lives to continue on. They did, obviously, time doesn’t stop. However, more parts of my life came to a halt than I could have fathomed. Our first was colicky - which is a generic medical diagnosis for a fussy baby when no medical provider knows how to assist. A new baby is an adjustment for all, but a colicky baby is undeniably overwhelming. The constant crying rivals psychological torture. The feeling inadequate as a mother, unable to soothe her child, can easily encourage postpartum depression. Due to these factors, my life changed significantly. I was less engaging with friends, work, family, etc. I had frequent negative thoughts compounded by extreme exhaustion.

You Spend So Much Time in Preparation for Change, that We Forget About the Rest of Child-Rearing

It’s funny because we spend so much time focusing on how to prepare for pregnancy and birth. There’s such an emphasis on the shortest portion of child-rearing. The real focus should be on the fourth trimester and beyond. Balancing a newborn, a career, a marriage, and the roles of friend and family member became heavy. I was in the midst of becoming what I am now. A licensed mental health counselor. It seemed daunting to maintain all of these, let alone do them well.

Another therapist shared with me this: Start every day identifying which two areas of your life you’ll do well on that day. So for example if you identify 5 categories of yourself that you expel energy into daily, let’s hypothetically say these categories are being good: (1) mom, (2) wife, (2) employee, (4) friend, (5) and keeping good self -care. It’s impossible to give 100% to each of these groups daily. Break this cycle by starting off our day identifying only two of these areas that you’ll give your best self. It doesn’t mean that the others will get no effort, but they’ll get a reduced or minimal effort.

You’re not a failure. The fact you’re reading this blog post shows how much you care. This chapter of your life seems completely overwhelming, but I implore you to adopt a mantra. Mine was “this too shall pass”. The truth is babies and toddlers are challenging. I’m sure all seasons of childhood are challenging to some degree, but for now, I strongly hold the belief that the first 4 years are particularly challenging.

However, they will continue to grow, get older, get have less minute by minute needs. I don’t want this to come off as enjoy it while you can. In fact, it’s okay to not enjoy it. Some days I’m simply through with this phase. That’s okay too. You don’t need to treasure every moment. Hopefully, the tip above outlines will take you outside of survival though. To a place between survival and treasuring every moment.
