You’ll Get Acceptance with Me
Are you trans or non-binary? Have you lived your whole life trying to acquiesce to society’s expectations? This is your safe space. This is the place to be you. To test out what you’ve been denying yourself for years. Something that I hadn’t considered, but have certainly learned over time, that persons that are learning to accept their true self may not yet be comfortable presenting to the public in that form. Whether they’re dressing more masc or femme, whether they’re fully transitioning, or just exploring what feels like them. My sessions are a safe space to present as who you feel you are that day. To safely explore alternative clothing or makeup for example. This is the place to have a nonjudgmental support system.
Whether or not you choose to utilize this option, we can work together on education regarding Queer and Transgender resilience. We’ll practice setting boundaries, learning about microaggressions, and learn about the messages that were given to you about the LGBTQ community growing up.
Far more Americans now accept that homosexuality is not just a choice. The percentage who believe homosexuality is something one is “born with” was just 13 percent in 1977 (Gallup, 2007), but in 2015, 51 percent believed that gays and lesbians are born as such (Gallup, 2015).
LGBTQ youth who report having at least one accepting adult were 40% less likely to report a suicide attempt in the past year. Nearly 80% of youth who completed The Trevor Project’s National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health reported disclosing their sexual orientation to at least one adult. Among those who disclosed to at least one adult, 79% had at least one adult who was accepting of them. Over one-quarter of LGBTQ youth who did not have at least one accepting adult in their life reported attempting suicide in the past year compared to 17% of those with at least one accepting adult.
